Eugenio Derbez & Jason Alexander resurrect Dracula in ‘Y Llegaron De Noche’, streaming on VIX
After a decade-long, Eugenio Derbez returns to Spanish-language comedy on the new VIX series Y Llegaron de Noche (They Came at Night). The actor has been busy on various English-language film and TV projects, such as The Valet, Radical, Coda, and Acapulco. Derbez not only stars in the series but also takes on the roles of producer, director, and showrunner.
The series draws inspiration from a little-known chapter in cinema history. The show is based on real events from the early days of talking pictures, when Universal Studios was double-dipping on its English-language films, concurrently producing Spanish-language versions for international markets.
While Bela Lugosi starred in director Tod Browning’s 1931 English-language film Dracula during the day, Spanish actor Carlos Villarías portrayed the blood-sucking count at night. The Spanish-speaking team, led by director George Melford, used the same sets and costumes as the English production. The Spanish-language counterpart shot on the same sets, despite it faced a lot of obstacles, including a significantly smaller budget and a tighter shooting schedule, turned out better and was more successful.
Jason Alexander, best known for his role in Seinfeld, joined Eugenio Derbez’s 3Pas production to tell the story of the dual productions of the 1931 film. In “Y Llegaron de Noche,” Derbez highlights the underappreciated history of the Spanish Drácula, filmed simultaneously with its English counterpart. He calls it ‘a success story of a group of Latinos’ who navigated the challenges of early cinema.
